Michael Cook
Plano ISD School Board Trustee, Place 5
I am ready to step into this position as Plano ISD Trustee using best-in-class board governance strategies, education policy, and
a commitment to provide every Plano ISD student with the opportunity to have access to a high quality education.
I’M MICHAEL COOK, a proud father of three Plano ISD elementary students.
Over the past two years, Michael has contributed to the Plano ISD community by serving on the Plano ISD Future Funding Commission where he helped guide the funding recommendation for $1.4B for Plano Schools. As a member of the infrastructure committee, we assessed the needs of each school in the district and created a short-term and long-term renovation and maintenance plan totaling $1.1B.
The Plano ISD Board of Trustee also appointed him to the Special Education Advisory Board where he provided support and advice on Plano’s Special Education services, including specific recommendations to reimagine the annual Plano ISD special education symposium.
He also served on the Huffman School Based Improvement Committee where he worked with the Principal, administrators and community members to set important goals for the coming school year. He also served as a room parent and on other various committees in his children's school.
In addition to his work with Plano ISD, Michael Cook is also a local business owner and investor. He holds a membership in the Plano Chamber of Commerce and the Plano West Rotary.
Michael grew up in a working classing family that valued public education. The son of a police officer and a secretary, his hard work, dedication and the support of many public school teachers, led him to become the first in his family to finish college and the first to get a Masters Degree.

My first priority is to improve student academic achievement
-
Student Achievement
The pandemic hurt our kids. We erased gains across all demographics and saw large drop offs in student achievement across the board. Improving overall student academic performance post-pandemic of all students must be our main priority.
-
Parent-Teacher Relationship
Over the past several years, the relationship between teachers and parents have eroded significantly. This has led to increased teacher turnover and parents feeling like their voices are not being heard. Improving the parent-teacher relationship will better serve students, reduce stress on teachers, and reassure parents that their children will continue to receive a high-quality education focused on student achievement and enrichment.

Student Safety
Post pandemic, Plano ISD have seen a significant increase in mental health issues being reported. While the ISD has responded by adding a small number of additional counselors, that approach hasn’t fully addressed the challenges that we are seeing in both teachers and students. We need to provide more mental health resources to aid students, teachers, and parents as they continue to deal with mental health challenges in and out of school.
